Carpet Backing Desiccant

 

Molecular sieves selectively adsorb small, polar molecules, while excluding large organic molecules.  Molecular sieves are excellent moisture scavengers for polyurethanes, and  aluminum coatings.

 

 

Hints for Practical Use:

 

3A or 4A molecular sieves are used in carpet backing.  3A molecular sieve adsorb gasses are displaced when the 3A molecular sieve is introduced into a resin/solvent system.  This eliminates potential bubbles that can cause surface defects.  4A molecular sieve should be added to the resin/solvent system under vacuum to remove any displaced gasses.

 

This may be an advantage in some applications such as reaction/injection molding where long storage times and pot life are not of concern.

 

Typically 4A molecular sieves import shorter pot lives than 3A molecular with longer pot life.
